2010 Battle of the
Books Guidelines
• One team per school.
• Each school will determine for themselves how they select the
members for their team along with an alternate.
• Four member team: two 4th graders and two 5th graders.
• A team will be allowed to compete with no less than 3 members.
• An alternate may play if for any reason an original team member is unable
to compete. The original team member may return
to play in future rounds. Team
members will confer on all the answers.
• A team captain, chosen by the team members, will voice the team’s
answer.
• Each team will be asked the same number of questions.
• Each team has 30 seconds to answer.
• Questions are asked in a format such that the answer will always be the
title and author of one of the books on the list.
• Answers must be exact. The moderator will be the final authority.
• Each correctly answered question is worth five points.
• If an answer is incorrect, the opposing team then has 10 seconds to provide
the correct answer for a 1 point bonus.
• Top four scoring teams will compete in the Semi-finals
• Top two scoring teams from the Semi-finals will compete in the Final.
• In the event of a tie in the Final, teams will play a “Sudden Death” round. Both teams will answer the same questions until
one team misses.
• Disqualification of a team by the moderator may take place for cheating.
• Encourage your kids to show school spirit with a team sign and/or t-shirts.
No mascots, please.
• Families, school staff and students are invited to watch their team. Please
hold applause until the end of the round.
